On the site of an old school between Cuserstraat, Amstelveenseweg and Kalfsjeslaan in Amsterdam’s Buitenveldert, four offices have been realised. Although each is detached from the others, the four combine to form an attractive and peaceful ensemble between the residential buildings that surround them.
The fact that the buildings are detached enables them each to claim an individual role in creating a pleasant yet clearly-defined space within a park-like environment. Because there is so much space here – in the true sense of the word – all of the buildings are open and transparent, interspersed occasionally with more robust materials, such as fragments of slate, green marble or rough concrete, enabling the environment also to be enjoyed from inside.
In contrast to these green surroundings, the three largest buildings have main entrances opening onto a central square of granite pebbles, giving added style to this communal living. This area also forms the roof of the car park that is completely underground. Gaps in the roof allow daylight to penetrate the car park. This solution ensures that the cars are kept out of sight and the park atmosphere is preserved.
